I remember floyd that was insane and trying to get home from work..billg315 wrote:Tropical Storm Floyd 1999 caused one of the worst statewide flooding events in New Jersey and rainfall was 12-14". Irene in 2011 max NJ rainfall was 11.27". This will pass Irene and maybe match Floyd.

All is good and dry at my house. But I am very fortunate to live on a mountain. Nearby highway (Route 10) was closed last night due to flooding.

Just woke wonder how it is out there I hear Westchester beeline transit is shut down. That's really bad if you do not have a car.

I emptied the rain gauge 2x which is 5.5 inches times 2. This morning it was 3 inches more. The stream on my property is roaring but we are dry. Nothig washed out, no pools of water. I am sorry to hear of the misfortunes of others. Frank 638, how did you make out this morning?

At least 9 dead in New York City alone from last night’s historic flood. Heartbreaking.

Very sorry to hear about the misfortune up there. I remember that from Sandy after a few weeks of some raw misery, the insurance and FEMA funds kicked in and created a bit of a silver lining for many at the end of the day, so hopefully you all reach that stage sooner that later. Obviously, the loss of life is on another level of misery...that many deaths is just a devastating outcome.
We were just flat out lucky down here in central Ocean County yesterday. A strong but short storm in the morning, and a few in the evening and that was it. The radar kept threatening with nasty storms, but they always seemed to drift north or disappear. At one point around 10:30-11 pm last night, the radar showed a huge red, yellow, and orange blast right over my house, and yet outside. it was nothing more than a medium-hard rain.
Again, my thoughts are with you all that got the worst of it...better days ahead!

I think this is another big win for the mesoscale models generally, and the HRRR and HRDPS specifically. They were locked on to basically exactly what ended up happening all day yesterday, right down to the heaviest rain being bucks/hunterdon. Pretty impressive.
I say "another" because I think they did best with Henri as well, at least in terms of the rainfall that ended up occurring in NJ.

Re: September 2021 Observations and Discussions
This is all so terrible, my job never contacted me so I attempted to go in. called supervisor no response. Then the director of scheduling called me when I was stuck in a dead standstill on cross county to hutch (headed to New Rochelle) that there was no internet or phone at work and to work from home. I left at 8:10am and got back home at 11am!! The pics and videos from this morning are aweful and to hear of such a death toll and one being a 2 yo is so sad. Water rescues are still ongoing and they are saying the waters will continue to rise on the rivers so tomorrow is not going to be any better. Schools here in Yonkers are closed for 1st day tomorrow. On top of it all my wife slipped down stairs and may have broken two toes. What a friggen event. At one point I did think there was a tornado nearby as the winds kept changing directions almost swirling around, got scary for a bit.
Who ever says climate change is not real is bonkers, sorry if I cause any sore reactions on that but these intense storms in areas that have never seen this are becoming all too frequent. and all across the country and world.

Re: September 2021 Observations and Discussions
Worst fears realized this morning. Loss of life in NY, NJ and PA. Many of the same downtowns in Central NJ devastated by Tropical Storm Floyd in 1999 and Hurricane Irene in 2011 are underwater again. Many businesses and homes completely flooded out. And then tornado damage on top of it. This will be a long recovery for many.

Screenshot from 6ABC in Philadelphia. For those unfamiliar, that is not a river going under a bridge. That is the Vine Street Expressway I-676 - the major east-west highway through the city - not just completely under water, but the water level up to the street overpasses above it. On a normal day at this time there would be six lanes of city traffic traveling under that street overpass, about 18 feet below.

What part of JC, Frank? Very general - Heights, Downtown, Greenville, etc.?
Here in Bayonne, a local hobbyist said we got 9.8 inches of rain, and looking at all the stills and videos I believe it. Our 3 coastlines were flooded onto the streets, the exits out of town aside from the Bayonne Bridge were flooded. Some locals on FB said their basements were entirely flooded - not just by inches but to the ceiling! Of course, all the roofers, sheetrock experts, and handymen are advertising their services on all the FB groups.

Sirens all day, my clients some have lost everything or had bad damage, our agency is going to be BUSY. We assist with not only mental health treatment but also have a care coordination program and we have a few resources already for being put up at hotels and shelters food etc. It is so surreal. Was so hard for me to concentrate today.

Re: September 2021 Observations and Discussions
5.84" inches.
Basement flooded with 1"-1.5" over 2/3 as we caught in time.
Worked from 10:30 last night the until 2:30 AM sho vac water and dumping it. We have a stairwell with a drain that backed up from our 1000 gallon seepage pit. I had brackish water up to my calf finding the 4" drain to plug it with a pressure cap can with stand 400 psi. So after that I had to shop vac about 150 gallons of water out and then it conked in it the driving rains. Had to at midnight drive well navigate through the road closures to FIL to get his shop vac. Got all the standing water up. Spent all day drying things out and shop vac the rugs.
Sore as a mother as 51.5 yr old. Aint 30 or 40 anymore.
The flooding was almost historic in my area.
River flooding now.
Roads still closed around here.
Sinkhole swallowed a car in Creeskill on a main throiughfare. My buddy wh is Sgt NJ State Trooper said the water rescued about 150 plus people from the GSP alone Bloomfield Barracks station. Then they caught about a dozen looters this morning. Incredible.

Think about this for a minute.
If this had hit three to four hours earlier with schools in session and rush hour what things could have been like?
