Re: Monitoring February 4th
I haven't been outside to measure yet, but even a cursory look tells me that this storm massively underwhelmed in terms of projected snowfall. Totals probably reach Mothrazilla level, but that's about it.

I still have over 6 inches here Mom, mostly concrete,LOL.Cold temps coming will keep it intact . 30 degrees and light freezing rain here.Going to call my plow guy to salt the driveway and walk.
The only thing that has been good about winter up here is the extended snowpack( resident statistican CP of the HV) which began on January 7th.Snowfall below normal so far here.Lot's of snow time left , however, so the jury is out for the winter ATM.
PLEASE be safe everybody who must go out with this icy weather.

35* and falling. Schools called early dismissal between noon and 12:30, not a good call imo, that is about when things should be changing over here.

Not sure how to embed the live radar. But if you click on the link you can see what I THINK is likely enhanced precip due to the leading edge of the frontal press. You can see a narrow band moving through NW NJ. Pretty cool.

The beauty of the HV in cases like this, Snow pack still a solid 6-7 inches, 30° and freezing rain. Trees are ice covered and I'm only 50 miles NNW of Midtown.
The bad part, driveway is like an ice skating rink and nearly killed myself taking garbage to the end of the driveway.

Went out to shovel the walk and measure the snow. There was an inch of ice, but not quite ice on the sidewalk. Incredibly heavy to shovel even though the overall total was 5".

I remember those days in my home in Mahwah NJ where I lived 35 years. The March '93 snowstorm with 17 inches, 4 of which were sleet, comes to mind.Pure hell shoveling. That's why I hate to this day "wintry mix"storms. The Boxing Day Blizzard's powdery snow of over 20 inches was a snap to shovel.
Guess you got warm nosed out there.

Re: Monitoring February 4th
Yikes! It’s dropped down to 33°! That’s over 20 degrees in 2.5 hours.
Schools in Parsippany called an early dismissal today - bad call, IMO. The district where I used to work (I retired a couple of months ago) called a snow day, which I think was a much wiser decision.

I was checking the soundings last night to see what was happening. There was a warm nose at 800mb that just wouldn't go away. Superstorm '93 was the best snowfall day of my life. 27" of BE-A-UUUUUUTIFUL snowfall. Reminded me of my childhood growing up in Herkimer. Every winter there was amazing.

Icing has commenced in Hopatcong. Already building up on trees and lines. Approaching the freezing mark.

Re: Monitoring February 4th
It is as bad as can be out here. I can't say what the ice is at, maybe between 3/8 or a half inch. Just terrible and anyone driving in it couldn't possibly stay on the road. CP, I have a trash compactor-great for keeping bags of trash under control until pick up time. Learned that up here when the bears got into my trash on a regular basis. Regarding the ice, I have seen it worse but not much more in recent times. Schools are closed since last night. A good day to bake bread. Doc, what you say about the snow cover is the story here although the roof snow took a hit. Still there, but just a couple of inches and shrinking. Power on so far. I would not even want to stick my big toe out there. This morning I threw a dog biscuit onto the driveway and watched the dog become an Olympic skater. Great stuff. 35 now and that's all it will be for the high. I expect it to get worse.

Do not undestimatethe the POWER of an arctic HP peeps. It has diminished in strength (1048 to 1035)yes which allowed the warm air to jog N NW that show 2 days ago. Arctic HP 's in the heart of winter has climo on its side and will win out as we have experienced before and will again.
Experiences = education.

I drove from Toms River to Irvington this morning. 57 degrees and then hit rain at exit 135 and the temp kept plummeting. Was 35 degrees when I parked

Models were slower with the frontal passage. I was suppose to be low 40's now I am at freezing - again e=e. Morris county reports of glazing already.
31* here now and dropping.
HRRR, NAMS were to warm as well at this time of day. We have 3.5 more hours before we release from school. At this rate and the cold air drain I can easily see upper 20's here since about 15 mile N and NW it is there already.
