Actually the historical average in NYC is 28.4.

The 30 year average will most likely be over 30 inches once the 1980's are no longer part of that average. That however won't happen until the new 30 year averages are calculated in January 2021.

Just trying to keep it real.

No 2009-2010 was much better. Almost 70 inches total....Larger storms always win out also. Plus we had snowmageddon

I can't think of 2009-10 without thinking about the miss that was February 5th-6th, 2010.  In the days leading up to that storm, NYC was in the "margin of error" zone between a lot of snow and no snow at all.  In fact, Thursday night February 4th, 2010, Lee Goldberg was on the air and he said that in all the years working at Channel 7, this was his toughest forecast and I don't blame him.  Friday the 5th I was watching the weather channel as the storm began in Washington DC and then it snowed heavily in Philly and then I saw the weather.com radar that evening where I was at Manhattan College in Riverdale (near Van Cortlandt Park) and it showed snow over me.  The problem: it was virga.  I stayed up late that night waiting for the first snowflakes to fall.  I eventually crashed and I woke up the next morning and looked out my window: nothing!.  It was a very frustrating storm for the snow-lover in me, even more snow than the misses last winter because of how much snow fell to our south...

However, the other storms that winter were pretty good.

That being said, CPK had 51.4" that winter, 24.2" less than the 75.6" from the record breaking 1995-96 winter.  And Philly got more than the amount I mentioned.  Had the 2/5-6 storm impacted NYC the way it impacted Philly in terms of snowfall, it would have been the snowiest season on record for CPK.

I remember that one. It did drop a couple inches in Staten Island and show showers in Lower Manhattan, further uptown and into the suburbs was virga. Close but so far.

I was traveling btwn NY and DC all the time back then and I remember the snow pack in MD to VA was crazy with the back to back big storms they had. We were way ahead in snowfall but they caught up toward the end.

the last few runs of the gfs and it's indicators are very depressing today considering how good they looked a day or two ago. I wrote in the lr thread that it's time to give up. what do you guys think has happened with gfs in the last 24-36 hours and are today's ensembles any different. I do not want to write this winter off on jan 16th but things do not look as promising today.

Do not buy into the OP runs just yet. The MJO could be screwing around with how they look. We're seeing drastic differences from run to run

Said this in the long range thread the trop forcing is going to cause the models to swing like pendulum these next number of runs. Until we settle in this pattern.

Give me 1993-94 and 1995-95 any winter winters that never ended it just wanted to SNOW and cold - incredible cold.

Hate to say 2009-10 was good but for me they are above that in my rankings.

Hy Math it's Syosnow here. As you know I lived in Bellerose most of my life. Correct me if I'm wrong but the winter of 96 we had 17 shovelable events with a total in the 70" range right? I distinctly remember 17 different events with one or two biggies cause I had a shoveling business back then.

And I'm in for another get together. Lock it in right now that there will be a historically strong storm that cuts to our west. Be Patient though!! The pattern will change by 2020!

Ditto Mugs

2 epic winters in a two year stretch.

93-94 Incredible cold, and numerous snows.

Many towns in SE NY saw temperatures -20 and lower, I took a photo one morning of my thermometer at -23, and remember I'm only 50 miles from central Park. Some town in NW Jersey saw -34 which I believe is the states all time low, And these were actual temperatures not wind chills. IT's just one reason I laugh when some people freak when it goes a little below zero.

95-96 well that's the Babe Ruth Of winters for snow, 93-94 was the Lou Gehrig.

Well Syosnow94 I hate to say this but the winter of 1995-96 took place before I really got into weather (I was 5 years old then). In fact, my older sister went out and played in the snow in the aftermath of the Blizzard of 1996 but I stayed in and played MS-DOS games on my computer. We have the home video and pictures my parents took of the storm, but I can't seem to find myself in them. lol!

Now, I'm not sure if you have seen this but you should check this out:

http://www.raymondcmartinjr.com/weather/

I know it's New Jersey and not New York but it gives you information about almost every snowstorm that has impacted New Jersey starting with the 1993 Superstorm. At the moment it does not have the 2013-14 winter but I hope he puts it on there soon.

Now if you really want New York and Long Island snow totals you can check this:

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/IPS/lcd/lcd.html?_page=0&state=NY&_target1=Next+%3E

If you scroll down you get weather data from Islip, JFK Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Central Park (the one that starts in 1882, NOT the one starting in 1915). It will then take you to whichever month you want to look at. One thing that baffles me for Central Park: THREE 4"+ snow events in March 1996, THREE! Something it lacked last March (while Quietace was cashing in on the snow then) lol!

Finally, are you familiar with the two volume book set by Paul Kocin and Louis Uccellini entitled "Northeast Snowstorms"? It contains many of the storms from 1995-96 with more detailed maps of snow totals. The book was written in 2004 so it the book does not discuss storms after December 2003. However, that does not take away from the fact that it is a must read for snow lovers)

Yes Math. I'm familiar with that book. I can remember staying up late to watch The Weather Channel cause Paul Kocin would come on at 10 to the hour to talk about the winter storms. Thanks for the resources. That snow map from the "great miss of 2010" still is depressing. I remember trying to talk my wife into going to Atlantic City so we could "gamble" but she had none of it. Flurried all day here on LI. Sucked big time.

One thing to note: Up until seven years ago, my family did not have cable so the only channels we had were channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 21, 25, 31, 41 and 47 (Spanish channels), 50, and 68. When I was in my hotel room at Woodloch Pines in August 2001 and flipped through the channels, I went to channel 31 expecting it to be PAX-TV (since I loved the show "Supermarket Sweep" back in the day) but it was something I had never come across before: The Weather Channel! It absolutely amazed me that such a channel existed. And keep in mind that this was back when it was all weather, all the time, before the reality stuff came in. Remember Marshall Seese and Heather Tesch in the morning? It was awesome. From then until seven years ago, I would go to my grandparents house (they had cable) just to watch TWC. It's ashame that it's not what it used to be.

And yes I'm still bitter about 2/5-6/2010. xD

The only people I remember are Warlock from ABC who doesn't come on here and that nut Laular or whatever the hell her name was. She was an old cat lady that talked about how warm her cats were and how they didn't like how winter was turning out. The last few weeks on that board were quite interesting.

Absolutely nothing worse than that scenario.Snow was so close you could smell it but not even a flake up in Mahwah NJ, while my buddy in Atco NJ (halfway between Philly and AC on the East-West axis) had over 20 inches.Maddening and sickening.

And yes I'm still bitter about 2/5-6/2010. xD

Yep, was watching TWC as soon as it came on and it was amazing at the start. You're description of the non-cable days are pretty much what we had back in the 50's and 60's, the VHF and "Ultra high frequency" grainy Spanish stations you tried to get in with your "fine tuner" dial on the old tv sets, mostly with tubes back in the day.
