Hm tweeted a defamation of the polar vortex late in the GFS run. Also ao looks to be heading negative on the GFS and getting stronger later in the run

Re: Long Range Thread 9.0
It's a good thing. a lot of good signs with the strato. A lot of warming forecast to happen in the next few weeks. see if warming can disrupt or split the vortex. we just have to wait and see if it actually happenschief7 wrote:888 HM tweet is it for the good or for the bad

Re: Long Range Thread 9.0
Significant displacement of Strat PV possible by Jan 8th or so. Good sign to see this at 10hPa.

Re: Long Range Thread 9.0
I heard 1977 was a pretty wet and mild winter. Not as mild as us now, but funny how they said that this year star wars and and full moon are upon us and in 1977 star wars came out and christmas was a full moon.

I don't know where you heard that but it couldn't be further from the truth.
The December through February average in 76-1977 was 28.5 degrees in NYC. 3 degrees colder than last December through February Average.
BTW- We've never been this mild in December so there's nothing to compare this too. We've shattered the record book.

1977/78 The average December through FEBRUARY temperature in NYC was 30.3 degrees with 50.7 inches of snow. Sorry someone is throwing out bad info there. That was anything but a mild and snow starved winter.

Good news, Frank. That, with the possibility of some frozen precip up here Mon-Tues, puts a nice big dent in this terrible mild pattern Nov-Dec.

Re: Long Range Thread 9.0
Strong NAM (Northern Annual Mode) conditions expected. This means large wave breaks, or pieces of the PV, will transcend from the Strat to the Troposphere. Hence why we're seeing such an amplified pattern to start the new year.
