Finished with 1.1 inches and now 12.1 for the month.
A nice 3 inch layer covering everything. December like it's suppose to be.

Not much here maybe half inch to an inch. Still gives some happiness to this cold. Now next week if pans out will really make it worth while.

Re: December Obs and Discussion
Finishing December below normal temps and 11.5” snow so far. GREAT START to what hopefully becomes a memorable winter. Here’s to hoping we all triple our totals by the end of the week.

This is the 4th time this month that we've got at least an inch down the Shore. It sure beats the last 2 Decembers.

.8" today 10.5" for the month I'm already a third of the way to my seasonal total. I've had 5 days of measurable snow this month. as CP has said this is the way December is supposed to be.

Re: December Obs and Discussion
Jon we had 3 snow events up to the 15th. My total was 8.7". Then i got an inch christmas morning which i still had some left on the sunlass grass side of my house til yesterday. Then .8" yesterday. 10.5 total. Remember it's not what sticks to pavement but to ths board in a sunless open spot. For example on dec 8/9 th i had 5" on the board and less than 3" on the pavement.jmanley32 wrote:Did I miss adding a snowfall in my total cuz im only at 7.5, we canot be over 3 inches apart on our totals Al. Amazing that everyone on TV is complaining about the brutal cold this December and going into the last day of the month we are only 1.9 degrees below normal in NYC.
We've grown soft.

I do agree with this. Now I think that average may be skewed by two or three well above normal days because on the whole I think the month was legit winter cold. But not crazily cold. That said this has not been anything I wouldn’t expect from winter. Seems like even when we have just below average temps the media makes a big deal of it, when after all its winter. (Btw they do the same in summer. A couple 99 or 100* days and you’d think the earth was melting). Wait until you see all the schools close Friday if the high is only 10*.

ha ha that was my thought when I saw how cold it might be next Fri....the only defense to their thinking is kids have to wait at bus stops or walk. Not all parents drive their children..in inclement weather.....I remember one day it was pouring rain and I saw a 4th grader walking to school in..with no umbrella...I wanted to pick him up..but I did not know the parents.and in this day and age you have to be careful. I dropped my son off and talked to the principal...he and the nurse went to pick him up ....so that might be a reason for them calling the day...

I agree to a certain extent, but I wouldn't discount this cold pattern we are in as nothing special either. In Central Park, we've had 5 straight days with highs below freezing and current forecasts show us approaching the all time record of 16 straight days. Some occasional cold snaps is typical, but this level of cold to be so unrelenting for so long doesn't happen very often in these parts. If people saw it'd be 40 after New Years they wouldn't complain much. Instead highs may barely get above 10 by Jan 6.
Feb 2015 was pretty cold but even then we got into the tolerable 30's and some 40s' from time to time in the midst of severe cold.

Re: December Obs and Discussion
I hear you in that. I think this is a statistically significant cold snap and one we may remember when discussing cold winters. But not anything we can’t handle in the northeast.
And weatherwatchermom, I definitely agree that you do have to be concerned about small kids in sub-zero temps (which we may have Friday morning) especially since unfortunately we can’t count on all parents to take appropriate steps to keep them warm.

I believe that 16 day period you mention was in the January to February 1961 time frame.I lived through that and observed it.The big difference between this long subfreezing stretch and that one was that at the beginning of the 1961 stretch, we had the JFK Inaugural snowstorm of 15 plus inches, a few 3 to 4 inch snows and then the big Eb 3-4 snowstorm of 20 inches.THAT cold period paid off in spades with a lot of snow while this one is doing nada, not withstanding the possible storm next week which is 50 50 at best.
