Sorry to hear of this unspeakable tragedy.weatherwatchermom wrote:I am so sorry to say we are devastated as a community. The mother and little girl(6) passed away today within hours of each other. Everyone has been out in shifts looking to bring the dog home to stave off another tragedy. The dog was sighted and ran into the woods. I hope she can survive another night. Tomorrow drones will be going up to help them search and I think a person who helps tracks dogs has been called. This day is just such a sad one. Please keep praying for this family please.(if you want to move this to banter..please do so)

25 this morning was the low. Average low IMBY is about 21. Yesterday stayed below 30 and felt like January.

The ocean storm looks like about 3-5" type of deal for Plymouth to Sandwich MA. Maybe BOS picks up an inch. I think QPF will be high but surface temps and the warm nose temps in the mid-levels keep accumulations down. Very E LI may seem some minor accumulations probably Twin Forks area only.

Re: January Obs & Discussions
Pretty cold now with temps only in the 20's, but we're looking to warmup this week. Upper 40s and 50's expected. Light rain showers tomorrow afternoon. Steadier rain comes Thursday.

23° and the average low for this day in Orange County is 15°, do the math the above normal temps are just unheard of even on what we are calling a cold day?

If the TPV doesn't beat that SER down towards 1/25 this month will be > +9 AN. My guess is though the balancing act of nature will occur and it will be sig below normal temps the last 5-6 days of January and ultimately wind up +6ish AN which is remarkable.

Don’t forget that will be 6-9 AN comparing to the 1991-2020 Norms which are already significantly higher than the 1951-1980 averages.

Just had a bolt of lightning in these heavy rain bands coming through.
Edit: OK, make that more than one. Wacky.

Re: January Obs & Discussions
The latest first measurable snowfalls at CPK. We are going to move into 2nd on that dubious list on midnight Sunday morning barring some very unexpected accumulations before then. Also put on here the 10 times single digit snowfall has occurred in CPK. It's about once every 15 years or so.
Folks wrap around this because records have been kept for 150+ years at the Park. There is a much higher than 0 chance this gets tied or broken. I am flabbergasted by this.
1972-73 January 29 1.8 inches (lowest in recorded history seasonal total 2.8")
1870-71 January 21 .4 inches
1999-00 January 20 2.5 inches
1965-66 January 20 .4 inches (very prolific end to January)
2022-23 January 19 T (ongoing)
2006-07 January 19 .3 inches
1997-98 January 18 .5 inches
2015-16 January 17 .4 inches
1994-95 January 11 .2 inches (.2 stood until 2/4/2012)
1885-86 January 09 5 inches
2001-02 January 07 .5 inches
1971-72 January 05 1 inch
1877-78 January 04 1 inch
1943-44 January 03 .7 inches
The all timers for lowest snowfall in a season at CPK. Last column is seasonal total.

1.23" from rain - what a storm this would have been...only IF cold arctic air was in place!! BUT such has been this winter.
33* this morning with heavy dense fog in the valleys - never seen this at that temperature before.

Great chart posted by Heehaw avove.I lived through 6 of those winters and they are not fun.The 1994-1995 winter was awful up to mid February then we got a twelve inch snowstorm.Hoping that happens this season.
That '97-98 winter was on a path to beat '72-'73 for the all time low snow total for a season, but in March we got 6 inches that promptly melted away.

Re: January Obs & Discussions
It’s actually unheard of. The last week in January where the average highs and lows are 34/15 in Orange County and with that track and NNE winds forecast Sunday night I have a forecast of 33 and rain all night. I have to laugh it’s so absurd.

Re: January Obs & Discussions
In case you haven’t heard (eye roll), Sunday and Wednesdays storm are likely to drop an inch of two of rain along the coast. In particular the Wednesday storm could come with a line of thunderstorms that causes localized flooding. Truly an awful winter for snow lovers. Not to say, I can see how N&W gets a coating to an inch from both storms on the back end. Also keeping an eye for front end snow with Wednesday’s storm.
